About Us

In May 1938, Edward E. Hoekzema founded the Frost-Pack Distributing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Frost-Pack was the first West Michigan, full-service distributor to the food service industry.  Under Mr. Hoekzema’s leadership, Frost-Pack proved to be a true innovator in West Michigan – the first to market frozen food products to restaurants, deliver ordered product to customers in a refrigerated compartment, occupy a frozen food warehouse facility and develop a wholesale cash and carry operation. Mr. Hoekzema and Frost-Pack were instrumental in the formation of the Sysco Corporation in 1969.  Frost-Pack and eight other independent regional foodservice distributors merged to form Sysco Corporation.

Today, Sysco Grand Rapids services western, northern and central Michigan and northern Indiana.  Approximately, 375 sales, operations and office associates work together from several key locations throughout this sales territory.  Key locations include the office and warehouse distribution center in Grand Rapids and delivery depots in Alanson, Cadillac, Kalkaska, West Branch, Niles and White Pigeon. With the hard work, dedication and creativity of our associates, Sysco Grand Rapids will continue its tradition of growth and prosperity.

Hudsonville Ice Cream

Hudsonville ice cream was founded in the pasturelands of Western Michigan in 1926 and is now the most well known Michigan Crafted Creamery. Hudsonville was a co-operative created in 1895 by local farmers who were looking for a better way of selling their dairy products. Their first location was on Chicago Drive in Hudsonville, MI. The creamery started producing ice cream in 1926 and was making six flavors by 1940, including Butter Pecan, Orange Pineapple, Tutti Fruitie, Chocolate, Strawberry, and of course, Vanilla. Dick Hoezee bought a controlling interest in the creamery and moved it to Burnips, MI to make room for the widening of Chicago road. He sold the business to his four sons in 1972. Denny Ellens bought Hudsonville from The Hoezee family in 2003 and moved it to its current location in a state of the art facility in Holland, Michigan near the farms which supply fresh milk and cream daily. Today, Hudsonville Ice Cream produces over 50 flavors and is sold across Michigan and Indiana.
