Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative

SYSCO also has been removing nonylphenol ethoxylate surfactants from SYSCO Brand chemical products since 2004. These surfactants are used in many sectors, including cleaning for detergents and in industrial processes. Both nonylphenol ethoxylate and their breakdown products can harm aquatic life. Since 2004, we have replaced 345,876 pounds of nonylphenol  ethoxylate

surfactants, commonly referred to as NPEs, with safer formulations in SYSCO Brand products. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is developing the Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative (SDSI) to recognize companies, including SYSCO, and others who voluntarily phase out or commit to phasing out the use of these products. SYSCO, along with other major corporations, is committed to the total replacement of such formulations by the end of calendar 2007 and we are working with suppliers to accomplish this.
